Default Power Play Continues to Struggle

The Ottawa Senators continued to sturggle on the power play and last night it cost them in Calgary.

I actually thought Ottawa looked like the better team for most of the night but just couldn't find a way to get one past Kiprusoff. More than that, they couldn't find a way to get one past the Calgary defenders.

Flames blocked a ton of shots in this one and played a really strong positional game. They didn't give the Sens much and made it nearly impossible for Ottawa to get to the net. This was a game where the power play had to carry them and it didn't. The Senators went 0 for 5 with the man advantage.

Say what you will about Filip Kuba but the Senators have definitely missed him on the back end. He may not be a premier power play QB but he's the best Ottawa has and things run smoother with him back there on the power play.

Ottawa is back in action Saturday when they visit the Vancouver Canucks. I would come back with Brian Elliott if I was Cory Clouston but don't be surprised to see Pascal Leclaire get the nod on Saturday.

Kuba could be a big reason, but I've never liked him on the PP. He has a decent shot when he decides to use it. But he makes the powerplay SO predictable. He never does anything to open up lanes, such as a fake pass or a fake shot.

I completely agree.

4 shots on 5 PP, is pretty bad. But I gotta give credit to the flames, they were incredible defensively.

All in all it was a decent game. Sad it ended the way it did though!

Exactly! If we're relying on Kuba to solve our power play woes, then we're in more trouble than I thought.

Use Campoli.

Campoli is almost as effective as a QB (I did say ALMOST, note that please) as Kuba.

He has a shot, a better than average one in fact, and isn't afraid to use it.

He's by FAR the better defender of the two.

Plus, he's dirt cheap and can be re-signed here for next to nothing.

Now...how can we get rid of Kuba?

Perhaps convince everyone in the locker room to give him the silent treatment?

Agreed completely. Everyone is overreacting way to much.

If Shannon went down with an injury and we don't score for 20 games does that mean he is the difference maker?

Kuba may get us more powerplay goals(Note i said MAY) but he will probably cost us equally or even more against us.
