Rookie Camp - Saturday

Day one of the Rookie Camp is in the books.

As expected they spent the 2 hour session running 1on1 drills, 2on1 drill, 2on2 drills etc...... Before ending with shoot-out elimination round.

Quick Notes

Erik Karlsson looks great; I truly recommend that you check out EK tomorrow morning if you can.

He has a hell of a shot, without looking you can tell that Erik had shot the puck. Just so much power behind his shots with a ton accuracy.

He looked bigger than he was at the prospects camp. In fact every time I see him, he seems to get bigger and bigger. I don't believe his size will be too big of an issue this season.

His skating is phenomenal, and he was hard to shake along the boards. I just couldn't find any flaws in his game yet, he was probably the most relaxed player on the ice today as well.

Again I strongly recommend, if you have the chance, to check him out early.
-----------------------------

Robin Lehner, despite being 18, is huge. He is already big enough to play in the NHL, and I'm excited to see him develop over the next two seasons in the OHL and at the World Jrs.

He's really quick down low and likes to challenge the shooter, which looked like a fault as well. In the shoot-out he was unstoppable until the players started pushing him back into his net.

Still, despite that, Robin looks like the real deal and should dominate the OHL with the Greyhounds.
------------------------------

Zack Smith spent the entire practice working shooting against Robin Lehner and working against Peter Regin and former Columbus pick Kyle Wharton.

Just looking at Smith's size, along with his shot and skating ability, Clouston and Murray will be hard-pressed not to have him on the NHL roster. His work along the boards was impressive and he dominated battles for the puck.

If he does, somehow, not make the big club, he'll be the first call-up every time.
-------------------------------

Erik Condra showed off his incredible wrist shot, and soft hands. He looked like he was playing 'posts' when shooting on the goalie, so he'll need to work a bit harder on his accuracy, but the pieces are there.

The biggest thing, I think, Condra will have to work on is adjusting to his speed. In every drill Condra looked a bit sloppy on the puck because he was going faster than, I think, he is used to. On that note I would say he's knee has 100% healed.

Condra will likely spend the year in the AHL with O'Brien and light up other teams with his wristshot.
-------------------------------

Geoff Kinrade joined the camp after signing with Ottawa a few months ago, and looked solid. He is a big body, and I find it hard to believe he is measured at 6'0" 207lbs.

If he can keep up the intensity he showed today, at the Sens Training camp he may actually crack the roster. He looked a lot stronger than both Lee and Picard did last season.

The way he was playing along the boards and in front of the net reminded me a lot of how the much bigger Pronger plays in those areas. (That’s not to say Kinrade is comparable to Pronger's level)

Kinrade does lack shot control, as his shots were all over the place.
--------------------------------

Jordan Hale is at the rookie camp as an amateur try-out and his performance today, to me atleast, warranted that he'd get an entry-level deal or an amateur contract for Bingo.

He probably had one of the hardest shot (behind Karlsson, Hoffman and Regin) at camp today, and he had the accuracy to back it up. His skating isn't the best, but his puck control was pretty good and he was solid on the puck.

His career to date hasn't been spectacular at all, with 14 points in 112 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL, but he did have a lot of quality pieces that he displayed today.
---------------------------------

Mike Hoffman, the spectacular pick-up in the draft this year by Ottawa, looked great on the ice. A 50 goal scorer in the QMJHL last season, Mike looks like a little bit of a late bloomer and a great find by Ottawa.

Mike was among the faster, stronger skaters at the camp today, and showed a very hard shot, 2nd to only Karlsson in my opinion. Similar to Karlsson, there wasn't a whole lot to criticize about Hoffman.

I fully expect Hoffman to suit up for Bingo this season, as long as he can keep up his work ethic. I think Mike Hoffman could turn into a fan-favourite like Mike Fisher, among Sens fans.
---------------------------------

I didn't get a real good look at Regin, O'Brien, Wharton, and Jason Bailey (very fast though), so hopefully tomorrow morning I'll get a better look at them and a 2nd look at some of the others.

Hey Ski... Were they expecting Cowick to be a important factor in this rookie camp??....

How serious is the injury to his shoulder..I did read he's scheduled for surgery early this week but is it a big thing or a minor tweak that just takes long to heal?

Did you get a chance to see a few shifts from him before the injury?

No Jas, this report and the following ones are from Mark Christopher @ HockeyBuzz.com

------

Rookie Camp - Sunday

It was an early morning for Day 2 of the Ottawa Senators Rookie.

The talk of morning was amateur try-out Brandon Svendsen.

The 5'10" 177lb Svendsen spent the morning out skating, out shooting and overall out performing a lot of the other rookies.

I'm wondering how a NCAA Senior/ECHL rookie who ended the 08/09 hockey season with a point-per-game result has flown so extremely far below the radar of hockey scouts.

He has a wicked wrists hot, and is a very strong skater. It's very likely you'll be hearing more about him as the rookie tourney in Kitchener kicks off, and expect to see him in Bingo.
----------------------------------------

Big Jimmy O'Brien, Ottawa's twenty-year old scoring version of Mike Fisher looks ready for a full-time role in Bingo.

While many we're uninspired by his World Jrs. performance, it's his point-per-game pace in the WHL that should have been the defining point of his season.

He went almost recklessly in the boards to win puck battles, and showed signs of the Power-Forward warrior that most are expecting of him.

While I wouldn't say he's NHL ready just yet, I will be surprised if they don't call him up once or twice this season.
-------------------------------------------

One of the most popular rookies - Peter Regin didn't look very good at camp this morning.

He wasn't as fast, agile or as strong on the puck as we've seen in the past. He really blended in with some of the amateur players.

I wasn't able to get a solid answer, but it is very clear Regin is playing hurt at the moment.

It'll be something to track in Kitchener
--------------------------------------------

Kyle Wharton, a former Columbus Blue Jacket draft-pick and Ottawa native is at camp and is likely fighting for his last chance to make an at least an AHL roster.

Fortunately for him, he has stood out at the camp and it's clear he knows what’s expected of him here.

He spent most of last night paired with Karlsson and continued this morning in a few drills as Karlsson's linemate. Its clear Ottawa is planning on matching Erik with a big shutdown type player, and in Kitchener it looks like Wharton.

While there isn't anything unique or outstanding about Wharton, he is a bigger, experienced 'rookie' who could turn into a low-risk depth player for Bingo.
----------------------------------------------

Keegan Dansereau is another player at the Sens camp, that has gone undrafted and despite some strong point totals in the WHL, flown under most scout’s radar.

He was fun to watch, he is clearly a player that has the potential to run-up his numbers in the AHL but will likely be a 3rd/4th liner at best in the NHL, similar to Jason Krog.

But as I mentioned, he was fun to watch. He wasn't the biggest or the fastest player on the ice, but what he lacked in pure talent, he made up for with a great hockey sense. He was able to beat other to the puck, and beat defenders by reading them perfectly.
------------------------------------------------

Random Notes:

Jason Bailey, the newest Senator, showed off a tremendous speed, but not much else.

Amateur Try-out Paul Baier was a giant on the ice, compared to the other guys and was a fairly strong skater for his size.

Goalie Shane Connelly was spectacular on day one but looked a very shaky this morning, he has a lot of poise and fast glove hand but this will likely be the last we see of him, as Mitch O'Keefe will likely hold down the starter job in the ECHL, while Chiodo and Broduer play the season in Bingo.

Matt Lowry, a pro try-out showed flashes of talent, but spent more time blending in with other low-key players.
--------------------------------------------
Also Rogers Cable (22 in Ottawa/Kanata I believe) is airing the Sens prospect games in Kitchener on Monday and Wednesday @ 7. (Thanks to GMhockey for the heads up)
--------------------------------------------

It was amazing to hear the amount of rumours and comments flying around this morning at the Sensplex, one thing is clear among the diehard Sens fans - Heatley isn't welcome here.

The things I heard a 12 year-old kid say about Heatley had me shocked - both at the very descriptive names he called Heatley and how much his dad was agreeing with him/provoking him.

As for Heatley to Chicago, nothing new has come out since Friday afternoon. What that means at this point is anyone's guess, but I'd expect things to get going again on Tuesday.

In all honesty, I don't see them often enough to assess such an opinion. I rely mostly on other people's opinions ......Plus I have no clue where the need is gonna be....
