Default The next wave

A bit more on the aforementioned guys:

-- Gryba is a 6-foot-4, 219-pound defenseman taken in the third round of the 2006 draft. He's currently a senior at Boston University, where he has three goals, six assists and 93 penalty minutes through 32 games. His player page at BU is here, and NESN did a pretty fun little video feature on him here. (Yes, he did get that penalty minute record). He's also the subject of a relatively new BU fan T-shirt.

(Side note: That last link takes you to the blog, "... On Being a Sports Girl." There's some good stuff there, including this gem which I apologize profusely for somehow missing around the holidays. Two things: Good to see old friend Mike Strobel making a cameo, and the Jackals certainly could have used Chris Holt, who by all accounts can carry a tune.)

-- Greening is a 6-foot-2, 211-pound center at Cornell, where he earned first-team All-Ivy honors for the second straight season this week. The Senators took him in the seventh round in 2005, and he's averaged 13 goals a season so far with the Big Red. His player page is here, and you can read more into his stats here. The gang at my old, old paper has this article, and YouTube offers this prospect profile. Greening is also a finalist for the Lowe's Senior Class Award.

-- Hoffman, a fifth-round pick last June, is a 5-11, 175-pound forward with the QMJHL's Saint John Sea Dogs, for whom he has a blistering 43 goals and 37 assists through 52 games this season. Let's go back to YouTube for this interview, and the SilverSevenSens blog offers a Q+A here. His player page with the QMJHL is here.

Hoffman now owns the Sea Dogs' single-season record for goals.

-- Cowick, a sixth-round pick in 2009, got off to a rough start this season, suffering a preseason shoulder injury. Since returning, he has 12 goals, four assists and 23 penalty minutes in 22 games with the OHL's Ottawa 67's. Cowick wrote a blog for the Senators' team Web site this summer, and hey, here's a clip of him fighting a familiar face back in 2008.

-- Last, but certainly not least: The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Cowen was the ninth overall pick last June. Through 53 games with the WHL's Spokane Chiefs this season, he has eight goals, 18 assists and 68 penalty minutes. His player page is here, and YouTube offers this draft profile and this clip from the draft, among other videos. James Gordon dug up this Q+A with Cowen, and a column this week for metronews.ca evaluates Ottawa's defensive future with Cowen and Patrick Wiercioch, a 6-4 sophomore at the University of Denver.

The future looks BRIGHT!

Notice how 4 out of the 5 guys are no shorter than 6'2 and no less than 210 pounds.

POWER FORWARDS FTW!!

Not to mention Wiercioch and Silfverberg or our gigantic goalie ROBIN LEHNER!

We'll own the NHL.

Hm, maybe I'm wearing sunglasses but I'm just not seeing the brightness you guys are. I would be shocked if Greening ever makes the NHL and quite surprised if Hoffman, Cowick or Gryba do, at least on a full-time basis. Out of those three guys Gryba is definatley the best prospect but he is just as unlikely to make the NHL as Cowick or Hoffman because of the amount of depth ahead of him in the system on defense.

You haven't seen Greening play? He plays a Brendan Morrow type game.

Huge frame and uses every inch. Has somewhat soft hands and a good finisher.

He is still a project but in 3 years can be a solid power forward force on our 2nd line.

I sure haven't seen Greening play. But In 3 years he'll be 27 already... And from looking at his stats and from everything I've read he sounds rather unimpressive and it is highly unlikely he will ever play any kind of significant role at the NHL level.
