Dynamo Moscow sign Jiri Hudler
Quote:
The offseason became a lot more challenging for the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, as restricted free agent forward Jiri Hudler officially agreed to a two-yearcontract with Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League.
"It's a testament to the perception that players have of the KHL as a viable option, from both a competitive and a career growth standpoint -- not to mention from a financial standpoint," said KHL North American spokesperson Shawn McBride.
Hudler, 25, was one of 20 players who filed for salary arbitration on Sunday.
Hudler and the Red Wings were in the process of negotiating a contract before the hearing took place between July 20 and August 4. By filing for arbitration, Hudler could not receive an offer sheet from another team.
Hudler earned $1.15 million last season while posting career-highs of 23 goals and 57 points.
The Red Wings - who won the Stanley Cup in 2008 and went the full seven games in the final last month before bowing out to Pittsburgh - have already lost a good number of players off last season's roster, including forwards Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson and Tomas Kopecky and backup goaltender Ty Conklin.

This one really caught me off guard. I didn't think Hudler would even consider going to the KHL. I guess you never know.

I think he'll be back in North America, but I actually thought he would sign with the NY Islanders. I dunno why, something in me just kept thinking that Hudler would sign with the NY Islanders. Oh well, he's a good hockey player, hopefully, he comes back to North America soon.

I read somewhere today..that this deal is on hold. The NHL asked the IIHF and the KHL to put a hold on that deal as per Hudler filing for arbitration...it means the NHL still has the rights on him. I will try to find the article...
EDIT: here it is:
Jiri Hudler remains property of the Detroit Red Wings and therefore the recent contract he signed in the KHL is being contested.
The National Hockey League has approached both the IIHF and KHL, seeking their intervention.
According to the NHL, Hudler is contractually obligated to the Red Wings for next season.
Hudler, a restricted free agent filed for salary arbitration, which in the eyes of the league is acknowledgement of his intent to play in the NHL next year.

Maybe once the ruling is out..Hudler can make a choice between remaining a Wings for the amount awarded to him by the arbitration committee or leave without compensation (which was already the case). Who knows...
Thing is, he could also receive offer sheets now that GMs found out he has to remain in the NHL until its all settled...

Does anybody remember the Datsyuk thing a few years ago? I don't remember exactly what happened but I am pretty sure it was a very similar situation. Everybody thought he was going to Russia or Europe or something but he ended up coming back to Detroit. Anybody recall this or am I just going crazy?

Keep in mind that this is Wikipedia..but here is what I found for you:
Quote:
He was a restricted free agent during the 2004–05 off-season, but could not reach a deal with the Red Wings despite repeated statements by his agent indicating his desire to stay in Detroit. He chose not to go into salary arbitration and played with HC Dynamo Moscow during the 2004–05 lockout. On September 4, 2005, Datsyuk signed a one-year contract with Avangard Omsk of the Russian Superleague (RSL),[6] and Moscow Dynamo matched the offer two days later.[7]
On September 19, 2005, the day the arbitration committee of the Russian Superleague was set to determine which club had Datsyuk's rights, Datsyuk agreed to a two-year deal with the Red Wings for a total of US $7.8 million.[7]

Yup, thats what it was. So yes, it was a kinda similar situation. A month before the start of the season he signed with Avangard and was all set to play in Russia but 2 weeks before the start of the season he signed with Detroit.
I'm not insane, Thanks Jasmine

A random thought on this Hudler situation. It may be stupid or nonsensical but hear me out and tell me what you guys think. Could it be possible that Hudler signed this contract - as ass backwards as this sounds - out of loyalty to the Red Wings... Well, maybe loyalty is the wrong word, but because he wants to stay in Detroit.
The Red Wings are approximately 2.5 million under the cap, to resign Hudler they would need AT LEAST 3 million, probably more like 3.5 - 4 million. So the Red Wings had 2 options, trade him or trade others to make room for him. Now that he has signed in Russia, who would want to trade for him if they have no idea if he will be playing in the NHL next year?
So now the Red Wings have 3 options
-Trade him for whatever offer they could get... MAYBE a second round pick, probably more like a 4th
-Let him go to Russia for nothing
OR
-Make the moves necessary to make the room under the cap for him and offer him more than he would make in the KHL

KHL confirms Hudler's contract today. 2 year, 5 million per year.
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=286217
Now I am big on Hudler (he was supposed to be my secret weapon in my pool this year ) but that seems like too much even to me.
Also, I find it interesting that they do this on the day Hudler's arbitration hearing was scheduled.

Did the hearing occur like scheduled? If yes, maybe something was said to give the green light to the KHL..

The KHL stated that they registered the contract due to the absence of a transfer agreement between the KHL and NHL, as well as the absence of a valid contract for Hudler with any NHL club.

^^ this is interesting..

Strange....so instead of signing for 2 years/10 million, he signs for 2 years/5 million. Something funny about that
