I know there was a lot of interest in a SensChirp league so maybe we can get that going. I need suggestions from the readers though.

How should we do it? Just a straight league where 30 readers pick teams? Should it be an EA Sports league team where we each control one player?

Open to suggestions, folks!

Things seemed to get pretty hectic in Ottawa over the weekend.

With training camp now just a couple weeks away, this really strikes me as an odd time for the rumour mill to heat up but it did significantly over the past seven days.

Will all this talk materialize into anything? Hard to say.

I've had the chance to speak to a number of people over the course of the last week and there seems to be a split. On one side, there are sources and contacts suggesting not much is going on. While at the same time, other contacts have told me that the buzz is legit.

Rumoured trading partners mentioned include the Bruins, Ducks, Kings and Predators. A pretty wide range of teams, which again, seems very odd for this time of year.

And while I've heard some fairly big deals being rumoured, Jason Spezza has not been mentioned. Not sure where that speculation comes from but based on what I'm hearing anyway, there's nothing to it.

It's important to note that even with all this speculation, Murray and the Senators do not HAVE to make a move. Any deal made this close to camp will have to drastically improve the team.

The good news is the rookie camp is just around the corner and training camp kicks off soon!

A couple pieces of news to pass on this morning.

The Senators now have a replacement for Garry Galley on Sens broadcasts this season. Long time Florida Panthers colour guy, Denis Potvin is expected to be announced as the new guy in the booth on Sportsnet.

Potvin played his Junior hockey with the Ottawa 67's. A fine choice if you ask me.

Also, as speculated for the last little while, the Ottawa Sun is now reporting that the Senators will host the 2012 All Star game. It's been a long time coming for the city of Ottawa.

There has been no official announcement yet but Bettman will be in Ottawa to meet with the Sens brass on Sept. 15 at which point they are expected to make it official.

Hope to have a rumour update later on today...
League commissioner Gary Bettman has a scheduled meeting with Ottawa Senators brass next week at which point an announcement on the showcase game could be made. The 2010-11 all-star game has already been given to the Carolina Hurricanes.

If Ottawa is granted the game during Bettman’s luncheon with Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and general manager Bryan Murray, it won’t come as a complete surprise. The club has been on the short list to host the three-day event for several seasons, after Bettman promised Melnyk the NHL would accept Ottawa’s bid once the league’s previous commitments to other franchises had been fulfilled.

Since taking over as GM in 2007, Bryan Murray has done an excellent job of cleaning up John Muckler's mess, he tidily up the salary cap fiasco and, despite some bumps in the road and losing some very good players, returned us to contender status, he signed our key players to long term contracts, re-stocked the prospect cupboard that Muckler had left bare, and now finally found a coach to replace himself. For all his good work, he earned a one year extension.

Clearly now, our biggest organizational weakness is in the department of offensvive forward prospects. We have guys like Petersson and Butler, who look promising, but they are longshots and still a ways away from being impact players in the NHL. Next summer we will lose Kovalev to free-agency and Alfredsson will be nearly 39. We've got a few good young wingers in Regin, Foligno and Michalek, but none are going to be big stars and whether any will ever be dependable first line wingers is still up for question.

We have so many pieces in place, excellent depth at the center position, veteren leadership, one of the deepest overall forward corps in the NHL with a good balance of top-6 and bottom-6 forwards, a strong puck-moving defense, and one of the deepest pools of defense prospects in the league. Sure our goaltending is a question mark but so were Philly's and Chicago's last year, and with ours at least the potential is there. That makes for a lot of valuable tradeable assets and a team that may be just one move away from being a serious contender.

With Murray's one year extension this season could be his last chance for his team to make some serious noise and go deep into the playoffs. He has never shied away from making big acquisitions through trades (Cullen, Leclaire, Ozolinsh, Sykora, Luongo, Jokinen, Ray Sheppard, Paul Coffey to name a few), even making one of the biggest trades of the late 90s, sending Ed Jovonovski to Vancouver for Pavel Bure. But excluding the Heatley deal last summer he hasn't made any trades lately that would qualify as blockbusters.

If there was ever a time since he's been with the Senators for Murray to go out on a limb and make that blockbuster it is now. With Murray's job on the line and the future of the team at stake, Bobby Ryan and the Anaheim Ducks are at odds on a contract and although Ryan doesn't want to be traded, and the Ducks certainly don't want to trade him, he could be available for the right price. As we all know, Ryan is an extremely talented young winger with a rare combination of skill, speed and strength who can hit, dangle, shoot and score in close with the best in the game. He is American but played in the Ontario league in junior so he would surely be willing to sign here long term and he would give us a first line left winger now and for years to come.

It would have given Ottawa back a 3rd liner(Brayden Schenn this season) and a first rounder.

More would have to be included as that is not suffice for a Spezza return.

I don't believe it but it would have included a piece going to Boston for Savard i would presume.

I see there have been a couple of developments the past couple days so here is a quick recap...

-First off, former Senators Jonathan Cheechoo has been invited to Dallas Stars camp. Really hope he can crack the roster there and revive his career. Good luck Cheech.
-Zach Smith has decided to don #15 this season. Good news for all of you with those Heatley jerseys hanging in your closet. I still plan to return mine to Dany on December 2 though.

-Haven't had a chance to do much digging on the rumour posted a few days ago but things seem to have at least calmed down a little bit. Two names being tossed around the most were Marc Savard and Bobby Ryan. Even got one email that hinted at Shea Weber...

-Shean Donovan is still without a place to play this season after his contract to play in Finland was put on hold. If Cheechoo can get a try out, you would think an NHL team might take a shot on Donovan

-Jared Cowen is switching to #2 for this coming season

Taken from a poster on HF:
Devils will dump bodies | Hockey | Sports | Ottawa Sun

Let the unloading of contracts begin for New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello.

While the NHL formally accepted Ilya Kovalchuk’s long-awaited 15-year, $100-million deal early Saturday morning, Lamoriello now has to lose some contracts.

The Devils must shed about $3.5-$4 million (all terms US) if they’re going to get under the NHL’s $59.4-million cap.

While the Devils would like to get out from underneath veteran winger Brian Rolston’s $5-million cap hit for the next two seasons, the 37-year-old can’t have his contract buried in the minors.

That means New Jersey defenceman Bryce Salvadore, 34, who makes $2.9 million, and winger Dainius Zubrus, 32, scheduled to make $3.2 million per season through 2012-13, are going to be targets.

If they can’t be dealt, they could be sent to the AHL.

A league source said Saturday the only way Lamoriello might be able to deal one — or both players — is if he’s willing to package up high draft picks that will make it palatable for other teams to take the contracts.

Sources say since Lamoriello is not happy with the idea of giving up picks, the Devils have been quietly dangling around 25-year-old centre Travis Zajac, who has a $3.9- million cap hit through 2012-13.

“He’s a good player,” said one NHL executive.

The Devils got their man by signing Kovalchuk, but it comes with a whole new set of headaches.

By the time training camp wraps up at the end of this month, there could be a few familiar faces missing.

Possible lines of:

Regin - Spezza - Alfie
Michalek - Zajac - Kovalev
Foligno - Fisher - Smith
Ruutu - Kelly - Neil

Would be great imo :)

Shean Donovan was ready to pack his bags.

But the former Senators winger has had to put away the suitcases and is suddenly facing the prospect of retirement.

After accepting a deal to play in Finland, Donovan was told the contract has been put on hold.

So the 35-year-old free agent is back to square one, searching for a new home. Except now there’s only two weeks before NHL camps open.

Instead of going for a skate Wednesday at the Bell Sensplex, Donovan went for a bike ride in the Gatineau hills with his lawyer, Larry Kelly.

“I don’t really know what’s going to happen now,” said Donovan. “I thought that I had something in Europe, but it didn’t work out. There was a deal I thought I accepted, but they said I didn’t call back quick enough.

“It’s all right. I guess it just means this is going to take a little longer. I’ll have to find something else. I said, ‘Sure, I’ll take it’ and then they didn’t call me back for a few days.”

...

Former Senators defenceman Christoph Schubert, 28, who finished last season with the Atlanta Thrashers, has been skating in Ottawa and is looking for work.

....

Hey folks,

Sorry for the lack of updates the last couple days. Good to see the comment section moved along without me!

I'm actually out of town this weekend for my brother's wedding and have my hands pretty full. I've been receiving a few updates on all these rumours but haven't really had time to sort through it all.

Just wanted to pass along some good news for Sens doctor Don Chow. His condition was upgraded from critical to serious.

I'll post another update, including more on the rumours, as soon as I get a moment.

Enjoy the long weekend everyone!
