Default Weight to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- There is a strong possibility that New York Islanders captain Doug Weight played his last NHL game on Thursday night.

But if the 39-year-old gets his way, that won't be the case as he prepares to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery on Thursday. Weight, who has appeared in 1,220 NHL games since entering the League with the New York Rangers in 1991, went 1-16-17 in 36 contests this season.

"It's a pretty intrusive surgery," Weight said on Saturday morning at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, where his team will host the New Jersey Devils at 7 p.m. ET. "I'm going to approach it with aspirations of still playing hockey. I think I still have the fire in my stomach when I hit the ice. My legs still feel very strong. The rest will be written in the summer. We'll see what happens. I don't know if it's going to be with the Islanders or not. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

"If it was my last game, I have no regrets. I had an unbelievable career as far as enjoying myself and meeting people and playing the greatest game in the world."

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully he gets at least one more season to really retire on a good note. Wouldn't want this to be his last game..

Hey Matt, if that ends up beeing his last game, do you think the Isles would keep him in their organization? Since he's already established a fairly good relationship with the young guns, the future of this team...

Who would be a great candidate to wear the C in the future?

I don't know, Weight's played for a lot of teams, but I think the Islanders would love to keep him on. Just look what they did with Garth Snow.

Doug had Tavares and Moulson rooming with him at his house (not sure if they're still there). He's really committed to a team that most people would understand if he up and left.

The next captain of this team should be Richard Park. Such an under-rated player in so many ways. For those of you who don't know him, he plays a lot like a veteran Chris Kelly - great PKer, blocks shots, takes key faceoffs, creates a lot of chances with speed but doesn't have the best finish.

Other captain candidates would be Mark Streit or Radek Martinek and maybe Trent Hunter or Sean Bergenheim as new assistant captains.

I read last week I think..that they are now living in a small house on his property, they have a little more privacy but still have access to the main house quite easily..
