Default With Theodore & Varlamov out, Caps recall Holtby from AHL

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals have recalled Braden Holtby from Hershey of the AHL and he will be the back-up for Wednesday night's game against the Anaheim Ducks.

The Washington Post reports Michal Neuvirth will get the start.

The move was made because two of the Capitals top goaltenders are hurt.

Jose Theodore left after the second period of Tuesday night's win over the New York Islanders with a lower body injury and is day to day. Semyon Varlamov has been sidelined since early December with knee and groin injuries.

The injuries leave Neuvirth, who began the season in the minors, as the current starter for the top team in the Eastern Conference.

To make room for Holtby, the Capitals assigned defenceman Karl Alzner to Hershey.

Michal Neuvirth's time to shine.

Semyon Varlamov has been out for a long time.

For a few days to back-up Neuvirth? Kinda a waste of cap space, especially if they want to add a piece on defense for the playoffs. I think Neuvirth is capable of holding his own at this level. Some scouts say he's a starting goaltender in the NHL right now, but is stuck in the AHL because of Varlamov and Theodore (all that will change after this season).

As long as the Caps keep scoring like they are, it doesn't really matter who is in the net on their side...really!

Fernandez was better than Neuvirth and Theodore combined when he was last playing.

You could sign him league minimum (which is further pro-rated for the amount of time left in the season).

I guess it's not gonna happen though.

They have 202 goals in 52 games this season!!! That's 3.88 GFPG, if they keep that up for the rest of the year, they'll get 319 goals this year when the season is all over! That's amazing!
