Default Binghamton Senators get promising rookie

Ottawa sends Karlsson for seasoning
-------
Make that two first-round draft picks along the Binghamton blue line, and potentially, a new weapon for that struggling power play.

The Ottawa Senators on Tuesday assigned 19-year-old rookie Erik Karlsson to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, with the hopes of getting their 2008 first-round pick more regular minutes in an expanded role.

A skilled, offensive defenseman from Sweden, Karlsson appears likely to see power-play time with the B-Sens, who are just 1-for-34 with a man advantage over their last seven games. And as the 15th overall selection in 2008, he now gives Binghamton a trio of recent first-round picks by Ottawa, joining fellow defenseman Brian Lee (No. 9, 2005) and center Jim O'Brien (No. 29, 2007).

"We believe that he's going to be a very, very good young offensive player in the (NHL)," Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray said. "We wanted to see him play games to start the year here. I think as the series of games went on -- the last couple in particular -- I thought he was quite good. But I talked to the coaches in that, 'Are we going to be able to play this young player a lot as we go forward, and win?'"

The impending return of Filip Kuba from a lower-body injury and the emergence of Matt Carkner gave Ottawa the flexibility to send Karlsson down for more development. Murray said Karlsson would likely travel to Binghamton on Wednesday, and that he'd "hopefully" be in the lineup Friday night when the B-Sens host Rochester.

In the AHL, Murray said he hoped Karlsson would "get exposure to the grind of playing pro hockey, being competitive every night. ... Be important down there. Be a key guy on the power play. And this is a process that most young players have to go through. And we're hoping when we bring him back up, whenever that might be, that he will be a better player. And I believe he will be a better player."

Karlsson had three assists, six penalty minutes and a minus-3 rating with Ottawa this month. The Ottawa Citizen reported that because he's played just nine NHL games so far, the first year of his entry-level deal hasn't kick in yet.

Hopefully he gets over the "demotion" and makes the best out of it. It can only help him if he continues working hard and helps his "new" team play better every night.

I'm pretty sure Alfie had a good talk with the young man before he left Ottawa on his way to Bingo...

Can't wait for your report on his play down there, Ski

Good. In my opinion he could have played in the NHL all season, but he wasn't ready to fulfill his potential right now.

To me, he got better defensively as time went on, but his confidence in the offensive zone was nowhere near where it was.

A few notes on Erik Karlsson's arrival today:

* Assistant coach Mike Busniuk said a final decision hadn't been made on who coaches would pair Karlsson with Friday night. But as of right now, Busniuk said he'd likely either slide into Brian Lee's spot alongside Tomas Kudelka, or possibly team with Derek Smith.
* Karlsson worked out with the first power-play unit, manning one point across from Martin St. Pierre, who has been moving back from center when the B-Sens have a man advantage.

"It's why I play hockey I think ... because I play power play," Karlsson said. "And I'm going to do my best to try and improve the power play here. I'm playing with a lot of skilled guys here as well, so I hope it's going to work out the way I think it will."
* Part of the appeal of sending Karlsson to Binghamton, rather than back to Sweden, was continuing his development on the smaller North American ice surfaces. Here's B-Sens head coach Don Nachbaur, when asked the question of how the 5-11, 175-pound Karlsson would do physically on such surfaces here:

"No concerns about physical play from me. I mean, he's here to learn that, and he's just come from the National Hockey League, where guys are big and strong and quick. And he was fine in that aspect. Obviously things are going to happen a little quicker in a smaller rink, and that's part of his learning development, is to be able to read plays quicker, to get to pucks quicker, and move the puck. And that's going to enhance his capabilities with the puck."
* Karlsson and Nachbaur spoke Thursday morning before practice.

"I met him before in the rookie tournament in the beginning of the season, so I've talked to him a bit before," Karlsson said. "We had a good talk about what he expects, and what the team accomplished so far, and what I'm supposed to do here. And yeah, I think we had a good talk."

Nachbaur was later asked about Karlsson's attitude thus far about being down here:

"It's good. He's a pleasant guy to be around. I think he's a tremendous individual. He walked in my office, we had a great conversation this morning. And he's here to help us, he's not here to pout."

Default Karlsson set for his debut with B-Sens

BINGHAMTON -- The Binghamton Senators' newest defenseman planned to take a tour of his new surroundings Thursday afternoon, with an eye on finding a good restaurant.

"Steak, I think," Erik Karlsson said, when asked if he had a certain cuisine in mind. "I like steak."

Before finding his way around town, though, Karlsson introduced himself to the ice at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, where he participated in his first practice with the B-Sens and quickly found his way onto the power play.

The 15th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Karlsson, 19, was assigned to Binghamton Tuesday by the Ottawa Senators, who hope to give their highly touted rookie some more seasoning in the American Hockey League. He is expected to make his B-Sens debut Friday night at home against the Rochester Americans.

"It's not fun to get (that) news, but I'm here now and I'm going to do everything I can to play good," Karlsson said after practice. "And I know almost all the guys here, and I know it's a good group. And I'm going to have a fun time down here, as long as I'm here, and work hard."

But while the B-Sens added one first-round pick to their blue line Thursday, they lost another. Ottawa recalled Brian Lee, the ninth overall pick in 2005, after defenseman Anton Volchenkov injured his elbow in Wednesday night's 4-3 win in Florida. Ottawa coach Cory Clouston said Volchenkov is likely to miss at least "a couple weeks," the team reported on its Web site.

With Lee gone for now, Karlsson will likely either slide into his spot alongside Tomas Kudelka, or team up in a defensive pairing with Derek Smith, assistant coach Mike Busniuk said. In Thursday's practice, Karlsson also logged power-play time on the point across from center Martin St. Pierre, with the hope being that his arrival can help Binghamton turn around its struggling unit.

"He's a good player," St. Pierre said. "He's a young guy, and obviously he started up in Ottawa for a reason. He's got a great shot, great vision, and he's very smooth with the puck. So he'll definitely help us on the power play."

Added head coach Don Nachbaur of an AHL-worst power play that's scored just once in 34 opportunities over the last seven games: "I think the one thing that we need is a shot from the back end that gets through. In today's game, it's very, very difficult when people stack the front of their net to get shots through. And it takes a tremendous amount of skill, not everybody can do that. A guy with skill, with his head up, that has a good shot, that has good presence and patience with the puck is capable of doing that. And we expect Erik to be able to help us out in that department."

After announcing the decision to send Karlsson down earlier this week, Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray said part of the appeal of having him play in Binghamton -- rather than return to his native Sweden -- was the challenge of playing on the smaller North American ice surfaces.

"It's a different type of game, I think, and I'm getting used to the game over here now," said Karlsson, who is listed at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds. "I've just got to work on the small things, and the more games I play, the more experience I get, and the more I get to know about the game. And yeah, I think it's good that I stay here and play in the small surface."

Murray also said Tuesday that Karlsson had been given permission to rejoin the Swedish national team for the World Junior Championships in two months, should he still be playing with Binghamton. It's an offer that Karlsson would seem likely to take him up on.

"I'm planning on playing well, and I mean, when the time comes, if I'm available, and if I get the opportunity to play for my country, of course I'm going to do that," said Karlsson, who was named the top defenseman at last year's event, where Sweden took silver. "I mean, it's the thing you want to do. So, I think if I have the chance, and the opportunity, and if they let me go, I'm probably going to (do it)."

The World Junior Championships run Dec. 26 through Jan. 5 in Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan. But for now, Karlsson is gearing up for Friday night, when he'll don No. 15 and join the B-Sens in trying to cool off the Rochester Americans, who enter with an AHL-best 8-1-1-1 mark.

"He's obviously got skill, and he's going to help many parts of our game," Nachbaur said. "I think he's a young guy that has tremendous upside, and that's why he's here, is to develop that upside."

That's interesting, I would have thought a vet would lead him in like Bannister but Kudelka has been really solid lately and having a good start this season scoring, playing more physical and leading by example w/ confidence so, ya, I like it..

Is Kudelka a natural puck mover or stay at home?

I'll say he's more at home but recently Tomas has expanded his role, therefore making him stand out more..he's even been in a few fights this year..

I've only seen Erik on tv but he's got some smooth talent, Kudelka might make this a balanced tandem on the blue line and 1st line starters for both..
