Default Bettman we have a problem

I strongly believe that as the quality of the NHL teams diminish so does the quality of the officiating. Who wants to be a referee anyway? I spent a long part of my life in minor hockey arenas and the worst memories are those of adults screaming at young children.

I witnessed grown men shouting at a 14 year old boy for a missed off side call, reward the boy made $15.00. So how does the NHL and OHL convince young men to stick with refereeing? AND the crowd went silent…………………………..

We had best start looking at programs to truly promote refereeing in minor hockey because from what I can see … well hockey fans we do have a problem.

Flex

You bring up a good point Flex. Referees, and I would think especially the young ones, should be protected and encouraged. Maybe we should start a minor hockey officiating union...

I refereed minor hockey until I moved to Toronto. I have had parents climbing the glass and proceed to cuss me out. I told one guy "GO **** YOURSELF!" after he reminded me that I was blind, stupid, retarded and my mom is a whore. I got reprimanded, the guy got banned from the rink for 1 year. I was 17 at the time.

Parents, coaches, even the kids...

I didn't have frequent problems, but when I did, they were pretty bad.

No Joke Josh like seriously if a smart young man like yourself or a few other geniuses here in this forum put a plan together and presented it to Minor hockey you could not only improve the sittuation but make yourself some money. Minor hockey is ran by a bunch of Idiots and low lifes along with a few over worked good hockey parents. It's time for a serious change. I could write a book

I ran into one of my old coaches the other day and he told me I should get involved and coach kids. Although I was flattered ( this guy is the greatest coach and grown up ever) after all the things I saw parents do in my 12 years of playing and 3 years of officiating, I flatly refused.

I was actually serious. We could start local or something, it shouldn't be too hard. Surely there must already exist some kind of group for young refs? How are they hired?

Dunno how it works here, but I was hired directly through the soccer club. I took a course and then I worked at that club.

Go for it and I will help you behind the scenes. They are all hired by the local Minor hockey groups this is the biggest problem. If there was a separate organization ran by you and you hired out the referees to minor hockey not only would you make money but you would be in a position to protect the youngsters.
