The Trapezoid
For 13.
Well, I for one am sick and tired of this totally fake device behind the goal. There is absolutely NO use for this thing. At the time, I wondered why they even put it there...and I'm still left wondering. How could anyone think it would be a good idea?

Why is it always about 13 he get all the attention. I much rather like 99 and what about the rest of us.

lol, good one Flex
Well, 13 and I are good pals, and I do feel like this needs some discussion. Maybe there's some monumental reason for having a trapezoid that I'm missing here.
To me though, it's a waste of space and it's stifling the game.

Well some ying yang wrote this
""What's the motivation behind the new NHL rule about 'the trapezoid': The newly-delineated area right behind the goal the goaltender is allowed to play the puck in?
The only verbiage I've seen about it so far has been the rule itself: "Goalies may play the puck behind the goal line only in a trapezoid-shaped area defined by lines that begin six feet from either goal post and extend diagonally to points 28 feet apart at the end boards.". That's clear enough, I'm not confused about the mechanics. But I don't understand why. My google-fu has failed me, and after 2 pre-season games now I'm just as baffled as I was before I saw a game.
Basically all this rule does is create two patches of ice, in the corners, where the goaltender can't play the puck. But the goaltender rarely ever played the puck there -- It's way out of position, and if you saw him go behind the goal line at all it was to go directly behind the net (where he's still allowed to go) to stop the puck as it swung around, usually in a dump-and-chase attempt.
I'm a big fan of almost all the new rules (still thinking about the shoot-out), but this one has me at a loss. What will change as a result of this, or rather, what is it that they're attempting to change? ""
It was at first thaught to be a good way to protect the Goalies what a joke. I think Buttman man was going over some old math notes
So here is one for SKIPPY the new math teacher

said it before and I'll say it again. Brodeur, Belfour and Turco had unfair advantages due to their puck handling skills, they put the trapezoid there to give the forecheckers a better chance and hopefully increase scoring.

If you think about this, you will see that your sentence doesn't work out very well. They had an unfair advantage due to an increased skill set? That's like saying we should give Ovechkin a disadvantage since he's got more skill than many other players...

Found this liked it posted it.
I do not like it at all.....Other than the penalty shot, which has diminished it's "exclusivity" since the S.O., the goalie leaving his crease and skating to the puck in the corner or the blue line was always very exciting and very unpredictable.....when I remember players making incredible save, game winning goals, etc....due to the goalie being out of the net, it was always exciting....Goalies getting checked in the corners and usually falling or losing a stick......In order to speed up the game to make it more exciting for scoring, I think the NHL Bettmanites have once again missed the target.......I think the game is more boring not having the goalies being able to move away from the trapezoid......they must feel like the animals at the zoo! ( I know Bettman probably didn't have anything to do with the ruling, but I use him almost as a brand of things I do not like in the NHL, regardless of his influence upon them.....Kinda' like Tissue is "Kleenex" and a soft drink is a "Coke".....anything I do not care for in hockey is a "Bettman".)

Now that I read it, its not exactly what I meant.
I am trying to say that good puck handlers such as the aforementioned 3 are as good as a third D. By eliminating this, it was thought that scoring would increase as the forecheckers job would be a little easier. The trapezoid came along at the same time they decided to increase scoring and the ideas of smaller equipment, bigger nets, and rounded nets were being tossed around.

Smaller goalie equipment is the one that makes sense to me. The goalie who is a foot taller and 60 pounds larger should have a bit of an advantage...

I really don't think that the trapezoid has done anything to affect scoring one way or another.
